Today, Representative Keith Ellison took over for retiring Congressman John Conyers as the lead sponsor of the House Medicare-for-All bill. Business Initiative for Health Policy (BIHP) is hopeful that this announcement will generate renewed energy in the fight for affordable and universal health care.
Members of the BIHP Board of Advisors were enthusiastic about the announcement.

“Let’s not reinvent the wheel.” Says BIHP Board Member and former Chief Medical Officer of ExpressScripts Dr. Ed Wesibart, “We’ve looked around the world, and Medicare is among the best systems anywhere. It’s got 52 years of success, rescuing seniors from bankruptcy and preventing premature death. Let’s improve it and expand it every American. It’s the right thing to do, and it’s the smart thing to do. Thanks Rep. Ellison for leading the charge.”

BIHP Board Member, former Republican State Representative in PA, and small business owner David Steil added: “This is great news for the business community. If we want to promote the free market, enhance international competitiveness, and lower costs, we need to remove business as the primary provider of health insurance.”

As a member of the BIHP Board of Advisors, and Professor of Economics at University of Massachusetts Amherst, Dr. Gerald Friedman knows it’s time to rethink how we finance our healthcare system: “If you even take a cursory glance at accelerating health care price inflation, rising cost sharing for the sick and disabled, and falling life expectancy, it is clearly time for a new approach to financing America’s health care system. I congratulate Representative Ellison for taking the lead in this fight in sponsoring Improved Medicare for All. Over 100 representatives have already endorsed this vital reform; all should join them to bring down costs, to expand access, and to save lives.”
