Business Leaders Applaud Medicare for All Caucus

The Business Initiative for Health Policy (BIHP), a group of business owners, economists, former industry insiders, and health policy experts, expressed support for the announcement of the first ever Congressional Medicare for All Caucus. The caucus, which will be chaired by Representatives Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), Keith Ellison (D-MN), and Debbie Dingell (D-MI), will have over 70 founding members, with more expected to join in the near future.
As health care costs continue to grow, and private insurers have proved either unwilling or unable to control prices, Medicare for All has become a rallying cry in campaigns all across the country, and recent polling has shown its increasing popularity. This caucus is an indication that Members will be taking a serious look at this issue and are continuing to build support among elected officials for truly universal health care that saves both money and lives.

“Health care continues to be the number one economic and social justice issue our country faces.”  Says Richard Master, CEO of MCS Industries and Founder of BIHP. “Medicare for All is the solution to our nation’s health care crisis. It will address the runaway costs caused by excessive administrative waste and complexity, and it will finally secure, for all Americans, a fundamental necessity: high quality affordable health care. I’m very excited by these members’ deepening commitment to fixing our health care system.”

“This strong Congressional Caucus will lead the fight for the simple and prudent, policy that proudly aligns with our American Values.”  Says Dr. Ed Weisbart, a former executive of ExpressScripts and Advisor to BIHP “Medicare for All will provide access to every doctor and hospital, allow us to target our creative innovations at public health instead of corporate profit, and help grow our middle-class in a way that no other version of our health care system can.”

David Steil, who is an Advisor to BIHP, small business owner, and a former Republican member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, added “I’m a business owner and a fiscal conservative, and I can say without a doubt that Medicare for All is the only cost-effective answer to health care.

“For 40 years we have been experimenting with for-profit medicine and market-based systems of health care finance and now have a system that is inequitable, that denies effective access to 20% or more of the public, and is about twice as expensive as health care in other countries.” Said Gerald Friedman, PhD, Professor of Economics at University of Massachusetts, Amherst and Advisor to BIHP “Improved Medicare for All is the only way to provide quality health care to all Americans. It will happen, and happen soon, because nothing else would provide adequate care at a cost that we can afford.”
